Make a Setup Jig for Grinding Gouges

It’s essential that the V-arm or pivot point for your grinding jig can be set consistently. To make a jig, prepare a piece of 3/4" (1.9cm) plywood or pine that measures 10" tall and 5" wide (25.4 and 12.7cm). This will match most properly set up grinding systems. At two opposing bottom corners, drive in a 3" (7.6cm) screw about halfway. Tightening and loosening the screw allows you to make minor adjustments. With the screw seated against the V-arm, the jig can sit on the outside of the grinding wheel. Trace the grinding wheel’s profile and cut the profile out with a band saw, jigsaw, or scroll saw. A recess will also need to be cut on the lower sides so it doesn’t contact the wheel’s shield. The jig can then be placed in the V-arm to ensure the spacing is correct when adjusting for one tool and flipped over to use the opposite side for another.
